Must Know Monday: In the Know: Planet Fitness moving into old Kmart in Golden Gate
Naples Daily News
Q: As a black card member of Planet Fitness (able to use all clubs nationwide), I was very interested in your article last July about the new Planet Fitness opening in Naples on Golden Gate Boulevard at the site of the old Kmart. This is much closer to my condo than the club off U.S. 41 in East Naples. Your article quoted the new owners stating that they would be opening by the end of 2018. Since that time, I have heard nothing about the new Planet Fitness and a Google search shows no updates. The lack of information in Google and on the PF website sure makes it look like plans for the new club have been abandoned. Can you please update us as to whether the Golden Gate club is still in our Naples future?

A: While the proposed Planet Fitness store is behind schedule, a new location is still coming to a portion of the former Big Kmart space at Parkway Plaza in Golden Gate.

“We expect the Naples Planet Fitness on Golden Gate Parkway to open this spring,” said Becky Zirlen, senior public relations manager for the Planet Fitness chain based in New Hampshire. “The 21,000-square-foot club will offer state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment, free fitness training, and a Black Card Spa which will include HydroMassage beds, massage chairs, and tanning beds/booths for PF Black Card members.”
Franchisee Kris Glidden of SWFL Fitness LLC owns the Golden Gate location, as well as Planet Fitness franchises on U.S. 41 in Fort Myers and San Carlos Park. Other franchisees operate Planet Fitness locations in East Naples, Cape Coral, south Fort Myers and North Fort Myers.
The contractor for the new Planet Fitness location is Florida-based JL Stone Construction. The project received its building permit early last month, Collier County Growth Management Department records show.

“Delays were all due to the county being slow on permitting,” Glidden said. “Construction has been seamless, and we are very excited to open the new facility.”
Glidden projects that her new Planet Fitness franchise will open within the next 60 days at 4955 Golden Gate Parkway on the western end of what was the last Kmart store in Collier County. For information about pre-opening memberships, call 239-228-5000 or go to PlanetFitness.com.
“If you are not familiar with Planet Fitness, we cater to first-time and casual gym goers who may have never belonged to a gym before,” Zirlen said. “We always strive for a non-intimidating, judgment-free atmosphere where our members can feel comfortable working out at their own pace. Memberships always start out at $10 a month, or $21.99 a month for the PF Black Card. The Black Card offers the above amenities, the ability to bring a guest for free, and use of any of the 1,600-plus Planet Fitness locations nationwide in all 50 states.”

Nearly 75,000 square feet are still available in the large space that Kmart vacated in March 2017 when parent company Sears Holdings shuttered scores of the discount stores nationwide. Benderson Development, the owner of Parkway Plaza, does not have information to release regarding other possible tenants for the remaining three-quarters of the former Kmart store, but Heather Fava, a leasing executive at Benderson, said Optical Outlets and a boutique store also are being built out in other units of the local shopping center.
