PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – A Parkersburg man is being held without bond, accused in a robbery reported at a local fitness center.
Parkersburg Police arrested Thomas A. Newsome, 24, after he allegedly walked into Planet Fitness in the Gihon Village shopping plaza about 2 a.m. Thursday and demanded $20 bills from a cash register while telling an employee he had a bomb.
According to a criminal complaint in Wood County Magistrate Court, Parkersburg Police arrived and arrested Newsome while he was still inside the business. While searching him, officers found a “pyrotechnic mortar wrapped in black tape” in a coat pocket.
Newsome was arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court Thursday morning, but because he is charged with a capital offense – first-degree robbery – he will remain jailed pending a bond hearing in Wood County Circuit Court.
No date for a bond hearing has been set.
Planet Fitness issued the following statement: “At Planet Fitness, the safety of our employees and members is our number one priority. We are grateful for law enforcement’s swift action.”
