Our 14th Annual Tri-Cities Race for the Cure is only a little more than two weeks away, but do you really know what it is all about? Every year, Komen affiliates host more than 100 Races/Walks across the country and three internationally to support their local community in a multitude of capacities.

So how do these event really impact our local community? Well, 75 percent of the net funds raised stay right here in the local community to provide education, mammograms and diagnostic tests to un-insured and underinsured individuals and provides patient financial assistance for those in treatment. Susan G. Komen® East Tennessee has funded more than $10.3 million across our 24 county region, helping countless women and men to be diagnosed and help them stay in treatment. The remaining 25 percent goes to national research to find the cures for breast cancer.

Our grant recipients proudly report the difference it has made in the lives of their patients. Stacie Davis, an Oncology Educator at the Regional Cancer Center in Johnson City, manages a 2018 grant that provides financial assistance for breast cancer patients in treatment. Recently, one of her patients was considering dropping out of treatment due to past due utility bills. Thanks to Komen East TN funding, Stacie and her team were able to pay these bills for this patient, allowing her to complete her treatment on time! This story is just one of many showing the impact Komen East TN has made.

We have also highlighted the touching story of the Chapman family in the past few weeks. Although the Chapmans were not in need of financial assistance, Komen was able to provide the family support and educational material to help them understand and review what was covered in their doctor’s appointments.

So, how can you begin making a difference today? Register yourself, recruit some friends and family and create a team to participate in the Race on April 13. If you are not a runner, but still want to be part of the day, don’t worry! You could also volunteer. Did you know it takes over 100 volunteers the day of the event and we could not do it without them. If you have plans or have to work on race day, no worries! Register as a Sleep in for the Cure/Virtual participant and still fundraise. You can also help us raise awareness of our goal by sharing our stories with others.

We’re saving lives together, and you can help us continue to make an impact in the Tri-Cities. Register for Race at KomenEastTN.org/TriRFTC or call 423.765.9313. We hope to see you on April 13!
