Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Joe Gomez could require surgery after struggling to overcome the leg fracture he sustained against Burnley in December.

The initial timeframe on the 21-year-old’s recovery was just six weeks, however he has been unable to train in almost two months and Liverpool are now considering surgery.

There are concerns that the bone in Gomez’s leg has not healed properly and the news will come as a major blow to Klopp given both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren are also currently sidelined.

Ahead of Liverpool’s game against West Ham on Monday, Klopp said: ‘I don’t know. We will see. It is possible, probably. It is not exactly going how we want, that’s how it is. He needs more time. We will see exactly how we do it.

‘There were different moments when we thought we could do this or that. It will take time. We can not say more.’

Gomez was in excellent form during the first half of the season, forming an outstanding partnership at the heart of Liverpool’s defence alongside Virgil Van Dijk, while he has also filled in at right-back on occasion too.

The Charlton academy graduate has impressed during his time at Liverpool but his progress has been curtailed by a series of serious injury problems.

Gomez suffered an ACL injury that ruled him out of Klopp’s first season in charge while he required ankle surgery in May which ruled him out of England’s World Cup campaign in Russia.

The youngster has made 18 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season. Joel matip is expected to deputise for Gomez and Lovren against West Ham.
