Athens residents may have seen internet ads, or received information in the mail, about a new fitness center opening in the near future on East State Street.
Planet Fitness is expected to open in the next month, and the building is currently open for select hours to those interested in purchasing a membership.
The international chain last year submitted plans to the city of Athens for renovations to the building at 973 E. State St., which formerly housed a Staples outlet. The city approved those plans in mid-October of last year, according to Kerri Yake of the city’s Code Enforcement Office.
“We expect the Athens Planet Fitness on East State Street to open in the next month,” Becky Zirlen, a representative for Planet Fitness, confirmed in an email Friday. She did not provide a specific date for the fitness center’s grand opening.
The company caters to first-time and casual gym users, Zirlen said. Memberships start out at $10 a month, or $21.99 a month for a more advanced “Black Card” membership.
The 14,000-square-foot club will offer “state-of-the art cardio and strength equipment, free fitness training, and a Black Card Spa,” Zirlen stated in the email.
Although she did not say specifically how many employees the Athens location will hire, Zirlen said the average Planet Fitness employs 10 to 15 full- and part-time employees.
